A Bite of Spain in Canada

Every great story starts somewhere unexpected. Ours started in a garage in Ottawa, surrounded by boxes of olive oil, cured meats and tinned seafood — and the stubborn belief that Canadians deserved to taste Spain the way Spaniards actually eat it.

David González grew up in Madrid. For him, food was never just fuel — it was Sunday lunch that stretched into the afternoon, neighbourhood markets full of colour and noise, the ritual of a good meal shared without rushing. When he moved to Canada chasing new opportunities, he brought that obsession with him. What he couldn't find, he missed deeply.

Álvaro González came from Asturias — a region where the land and the sea meet on the plate, where cider flows freely and every product carries the weight of generations. He arrived in Canada with the same hunger: not just for opportunity, but for the flavours that felt like home.

They met in Ottawa, as fate tends to arrange these things — two Spaniards in a city that had everything except a proper Spanish pantry. Over shared meals and long conversations about what they missed most, an idea took shape: why not bring Spain to Canada themselves?

The garage was their first warehouse. The first orders were delivered by car. The first clients were restaurants and friends who trusted them enough to take a chance. It wasn't glamorous — but it was real, and it tasted exactly right.

That was over ten years ago. Today, Solfarmers supplies more than 120 restaurants, hotels, gourmet shops and delicatessens across Canada — through wholesale accounts, an online store and a growing network of distributors. The garage is long gone, but the mission hasn't changed by a single ingredient.

We import directly from certified producers across Spain — from Galician seafood conservas to Manchego cheese, from Andalusian olive oils to the finest Iberian charcuterie — because authenticity isn't a marketing word for us. It's personal.

Solfarmers is a bite of Spain in Canada. Built by two people who moved far from home and decided, instead of missing it, to share it.

Officially recognised by the Embassy of Spain as an authentic Spanish Colmado.

After more than ten years of bringing the real taste of Spain to Canadian tables, we received news that meant everything to us: the Embassy of Spain has officially recognised Solfarmers as an authentic Spanish colmado— a traditional Spanish grocer, certified at the highest level. It is a recognition that goes beyond a certificate on a wall. It is confirmation that what David and Álvaro set out to do in that Ottawa garage has always been genuine. That every product we source, every order we deliver, and every relationship we build with our partners carries the weight of something real. Today, through ourphysical store, our online shop, our wholesale accounts and our network of distributors, we continue doing exactly what we promised from the beginning —bringing a little piece of Spain to every corner of Canada, one delivery at a time. Because food is more than nourishment. It is memory, identity and joy. And we are not done sharing it.
