Cured meats vary in their ingredients, format and storage requirements. “Artisan”, “premium” and “traditional” are not enough to establish a product's nutritional value or safety.
Read the ingredient list
Look for the meat used, seasonings and declared allergens. Some sausages contain milk ingredients. Products with similar names can have different recipes.
Check portions and salt
Use the nutrition table to compare products at the same serving size. Plan cured meats as one part of a varied meal and include vegetables and other accompaniments.
Check storage
A cured product can still require refrigeration. Follow the package instructions before and after opening and use clean utensils when serving.
Compare the full product description
For Iberian products, check breed percentage and feeding claims. For any cured meat, compare net weight, sliced or whole format and the producer's instructions rather than relying on broad health promises.
