Comparing Spanish Ham: A Label Checklist

Use a product-by-product comparison when shopping for Spanish ham at Solfarmers, Costco or another retailer. A retailer's name alone does not establish the ham's breed, feeding category, authenticity or curing method.

A practical label checklist

  • Product name: Serrano, Iberian ham or another identified category.
  • For Iberian ham: breed percentage and feeding category.
  • Producer, origin and declared curing information.
  • Format: sliced, boneless or whole bone-in leg.
  • Net weight and any included holder, knife or accessories.
  • Storage requirements and current delivery terms.

Compare price fairly

Match grade and format before comparing prices. The weight of a whole bone-in leg includes bone, rind and fat, while a sliced pack gives a ready-to-serve portion. Do not assume the two weights represent the same amount of edible ham.

Choose for your meal

Small sliced packs can suit a first tasting. A whole leg can suit a larger gathering when you have carving equipment and a storage plan. Check the current listings; stock and prices can change.
